Unearthing Stories in the Land
Rolling hills, rocky cli!s, windswept dunes, wide expanses of grasses and groves of trees inspire the geography I paint. I feel calm and connected to the larger picture when I stand in natural settings. The silence that murmurs in the shadows and on the horizons reminds me to be, not do.
Stillness and “soft fascination” help me discover the inherent beauty of the setting. I see the world unfold through nature’s eyes. Landscapes speak in gentle lines, undiluted colors, sculptured textures and sensual folds of the earth.
Working from memory, sketches and photographs, I grant myself a lot of freedom in the way I represent landscapes. My whole being slows down and becomes present to everything.
I process the features, interpret relationships, insert imaginary details, and create spaces for the eye to rest. Loose gestures describe essential details. I convey the sensuality in ecology with biomorphic shapes.
By shifting perception from myself to the natural setting, I bring the outside in. The artwork becomes a living document that captures a silent dialogue, a story with many endings.
