Objects As Self

An invitation is an autobiographical portrait using objects.

The sculpture in the foreground represents my personal self. I imagine the body tenderly holding the earth, evoking conscious stewardship of the planet. The leaf provides support and refuge for the being. The figurine depicts a two-way dynamic interplay of mutuality—a person supporting the planet while being provided for by the environment.

The body, reduced to essential forms, is a metaphor for much of my creative work: painting, illustration, photography and design. Simplifying complexity is the focus of each practice.

An Invitation by Marlene Sinicki

The wings of the figure represent my interests in spiritual matters and the related issues of aligning my life with ancient wisdom and essential truths.

I chose an enamel Japanese teapot to represent my social identity as a tea lover and an artist. I love surrounding myself with beauty and sharing cups of tea with friends.

I sought to invite the viewer in with warm yellow and cool violet colors. Yellow represents the optimistic outlook I aspire to each day. I associate violet with the future, imagination, and the transformation of the soul.

The garden image painted on the vessel is playful and welcoming. The sensual lines, organic forms, and dynamic processes found in nature inform my life and work.

The hummingbird illustrates my insatiable curiosity about wide-ranging ideas. Ever seeking the sweetest nectar, the bird reminds me of my daily goals to seek the good in life and the beauty in each day.
